Aerial and Ground Photographs of British Airfields

RAF Upper Heyford

Firstly, a selection of aerial shots of Upper Heyford, taken by me in June 1998 from a PA28 flown by Gary Cook. The airfield was used for car storage by this time.

Luftwaffe RF-4E Phantoms about to roll at Upper Heyford

Before Upper Heyford became a car park, lovely aircraft such as this pair of German recce Phantoms could regularly be seen there. This is a typical military approach light installation in the UK (at British and American occupied airfields), with the lights mounted on wooden poles with strobes housed in orange boxes on the centreline installations. Wooden fences attempt to keep people out of the areas where the lights are. Shortly after this shot was taken, the view disappeared in a pall of smoke as the throttles were opened on the J-79s!
