Boeing F-15I Strike Eagle

A trio of Israeli F-15Is were the undisputed stars of this year's excellent Waddinton airshow. Here the one in the flying display gets airborne. Many of you guessed correctly, those that didn't mainly went for Su-27 or MiG-29.

Airbus A300B4-203

The clues to this one were the upward sloping windows indicating it was an A300 or A310, and the dorsal spine which indicates it is a first generation A300.

This month's winners:

Indrek Aavisto, Andy Alexander, Keith Anderson, Stewart Goldsmith, Larry Graham, Lee Hodgkinson, Hans Høgh, Benny Jørgensen, Faique Khan, Emilio Lafuente, Garry Lakin, Colin Marshall, Paul Michaels, Bob Morales, Gilles Panunzi, Mark Saxon, Ron Smith, Stuart Smith and Kevin Webb.

April 2001 Quiz Answer

General Dynamics F-111F Aardvark
View full size (approx.1024*700/75kb) version

General Dynamics F-111F Aardvark

Loads of people thought this was an F-14! But no, it's an F-111F on finals to Fairford during a deployment in 1995. The crew reported suspected wheel-brake problems so decided to deploy the emergency arrester hook in case they couldn't stop before the end of the runway. After touchdown the hook dragged along the runway surface producing a shower of sparks, but as far as we could tell it easily stopped before reaching the end of the runway so the hook wasn't needed in the end.

This month's winners:

Indrek Aavisto, Roli Buechler, Luis Corado, Carl Crabb, Nicholas Davis, Noel Giddings, Larry Graham, Graham Haynes, Hans Høgh, Benny Jørgensen, Philip Moore, Joeri Sarens, Stuart Smith, Peter Starling, Massimo Tessitori, Bruno Vanclee and Devin Wilkins.

I couldn't resist using this head-on shot of a P.166! A good few of you guessed correctly as usual, but a few high-scoring regulars plumped for DHC4 Caribou, which is understandable.

This month's winners:

Indrek Aavisto, Holger Bernau, Simon Bratschi, Robert Brevitt, David Carter, Noel Giddings, Dave Hill, Hans Høgh, Benny Jørgensen, Garry Lakin, Luiz Longo, Paul Michaels, Kamil Pankuch, Keith Quixley, Dave Robins, Claes Sköld, Keith Wardell and Andrew Wilson.

Douglas DC-8-62

Douglas DC-8-62

The clean wing leading edge and engine pylons were the big clues here, as was the airline livery. Plenty of people got it correct, but a lot did not - quite understandable as the DC-8 had a multitude of engine nacelles, some of which look completely different from these, even on other series 60 aircraft. As you can probably guess, the most common incorrect answers were for the 707 or Convair 880/990.

This month's winners:

Keith Anderson, Anders Annerfalk, Holger Bernau, Simon Bratschi, David Bromley, Steve Cambers, David Carter, Nicholas Davis, Lex de Kort, Matthew Easton, Dave Fleming, J. I thought this one would cause some problems, but many of you still got it correct. Anybody know what the spike extending from the tailcone is for? I guess it is some kind of antenna. Somehow I guess it is not a MAD sting for anti-submarine missions :)

There is concern over the availability of Prowlers in sufficient numbers to carry out their task in times of conflict, and one option is to reactivate a bunch of Ravens. Here's hoping :)

This month's winners:

Hawker-Siddeley Dominie T1

Back to an easy one this month! The Dominie T1 is the RAF's navigation trainer version of the HS125, given the series 200 designation by the manufacturer and recalling a name previously given to a previous generation of de Havilland twin (the Dragon Rapide). The prominent red colour and the narrow diameter of the engine air intake (typical of the engines fitted to early biz-jets) provide the clues in the picture. Almost everyone who got it wrong opted for some other kind of biz-jet.

British Aircraft Corporation/Dee Howard 1-11-2400

I agree this one was difficult. Very difficult! Only one of these aircraft was built; or rather converted. The port RR Spey engine of this BAC 1-11-400 was replaced with a high bypass ratio RR Tay in a development programme for re-engining of 1-11s. This was done by Dee Howard and the aircraft redesignated as the 1-11-2400. It was that full designation I was looking for. This aircraft was displayed at Farnborough in 1990 but sadly Dee Howard terminated the programme before certification, allegedly in no small part due to the reluctance of British Aerospace to supply engineering data as they feared re-engined 1-11s would hamper sales of the 146/RJ line of regional jets. A testimony to the strength of the 1-11 design me thinks.

I can report that only three people got the answer exactly right. Those who simply entered 1-11 do not get a point I am sorry to say, as I clearly stated in the question that I needed type and variant. Other guesses included a variety of small rear-engined airliners such as Fokker F28 and McDonnell Douglas MD87 and the odd biz jet.
