Seeing Canbera pictures was bringing back memories. We used to fly from UK to Germany on Hi-Lo sorties to check our navigation skills, and photograph targets. I remember going down the Rhine and saw the barges going up and down, also railway and trains. All from the front glass pod, realy felt like the WW2 airmers on the job? Those were the days, all gone now. Although the aircraft are now old, I still think they were fantastic aircraft, wonderful to fly. Thanks for a great web site. I have been nearly every year to Yeovilton airshow, it is realy good. Talking of airfields, I remember being at RAF Tangmere when it was an operational station, long time ago.

Great photo's of Wainfleet flats or aircraft. Lived near their when I was a boy but never went too see it, what a waste. But used to see the aircraft come around. Also what I did see was the Lancaster's doing their runs when they were filming the Dambusters in the 1950's. Those were the days, when are they doing it again, so I can get to see it? Thanks for a great web site. [See the links page for link to the Wainfleet website run by ESAG and head for the news section - Nick]

I would like to know if anyone has photographs or information of East Kirkby in Lincolnshire, near Conningsby. It was used by the United States heavey aircraft. Our farm was at the aircrafts turning point for the circuit as they came into land. I was fascinated as a boy, but did not know what the aircraft were? What were they? How long were they their? This was 1940's and 1950's. Also Spilsby was on trial for opening, but never opened, too much water. Love to hear of anyone serving at East Kirkby and details of what went on their. Thanks a lot. I love this site. [Please reply via the guestbook - Nick]

Your site brings back a great deal of fond memories of the English country side which I enjoyed so very much. I was sationed at RAF Woodbringe with the 81st SPS from 1971 thru 1974. I recieved training at RAF Debden to be one of the first to go through the course of Drug Detection Dog's. My days in the UK were great and in my free time I would drive the back roads in my MGB looking for a little history and that out of the way historic old pub. The 81st had a mission to fullfill as being one of the front line deterents to that then evil USSR but also kept a lot of us away from South East Asia. Thanks for the site...

I suspected an exhaust leak in my recent 1986 MR2 purchase. After browsing your website, I decided to take a peak under the heat shield. I saw the identical manifold crack you posted! Thanks for the info.

Just wanted to let you know that I used your MR2 buyers guide to view a car yesterday afternoon, and I have put a deposit on it. Thanks to your helpful information I was able to check everything a lot more thoroughly than I would have done otherwise, you made it very easy for me to understand the pitfalls of buying an MR2 Mk1.

Instead of worrying about it, Im quite looking forward to picking it up as your info has provided me with piece of mind, (almost!), that the car is Ok.

It would seem Derek Pennington unfortunatly was wrong as I left (Saddly) the R A F in Sept 1952,I,m certain the date of my wonder flight was july 1950!, as this was the one and only time an Australian lincoln Bomber was on exchange duty with theRAF in the U K, And the date according to LINCOLN AT WAR was as stated July 1950!( incidently this aussie linc was allover natural metal no paint! it was that fast that the only way it could stay in formation with was by FLYING WITH ITS WHEELS DOWN THE WHOLE OF THE TRIP!, PLEASE has any one got or knows how to get a copy of a film of the event?( I realy am desperate ). I look on your wonderful site most days and am Pleased to tell you that I do pass on the info about it to any one who will listen, Many thanks

Wonderful pictures indeed. I served my time in the RAF with a Jack Challoner, any relation. This would be in the mid-50s. Eric Brumby and I were airbourne in Lincolns on the same day. It was for the Queen's Coronation RAF Review Flypast at Odiham, July 15th, 1953. I came from Hemswell.. Great occasion.

Just found your amazing site,In1950 whilst serving with the R A F at Upwood uk,was airborne in a Lincoln bomber, seems like the whole of the R A F was up there with us on the most exciting day of my life! it was a mass fly past,I was in the top turret and all you could see was dozens of different R A F aircraft. we flew over (possibly Farnborough)a huge airfield at about 1000 ft all I could see below were row upon row of aircraft gleaming in the sun, A truly magical thing to see if you love aircraft as I do, a most unforgetable experiance, with us flew a R A A F silver Lincoln over especialy for this momentous event(first and only time ),...At the grand young age of77 I have forgotten any dates etc I,m sure it was in 1950 anyone out there know anything further?and more importantly are there any photos to be had of this fantastic days event? any help gratefuly recieved.thanks everyone.

Fantastic pics of the Antonov AN-225 Mryia. Visited my son in Leeds last weekend, saw it fly over and wondered what it was. My son found out through Google and has Emailed the Gen to me. I served in the RAF during WW2 and am interested in all aircraft. I had not even heard of this plane. Congrats on great pictures.

I have an '89 MR2 that I purchased 2 1/2 years ago from the original owner 4 US$1000. It's still runs great! One thing I wanted to know is how to change the air filter. I found your website by searching the internet and I think I now know where to look (I usually have my mechanic change it but he's since closed his shop). Thanks for the help.

Great website Nick, nice to see someone else mad about a cracking little car. For the last 14 years I've owned a 1988 mica blue coupe. When the engine is ticking over its fine but if you lift the revs to about 3000rpm it developes a rattle. Me being a novice who likes to have a go have you any ideas? It seems to come from the top end. The rest of the car is in great condition apart from the lips on the rear arches which i intend to get sorted. Hope you can help, cheers Ian

Mr. Challoner:

I happened upon the "Airfield Hunting" section of your web site in the course of some research that I was doing on my father, Lt. Robert Neville of the US 9th Air Force, who flew B-26's out of Greeat Dunmow in 1943 & 44. I am trying to plan a trip to England either this Fall or next Spring, to visit the airfields at which he was stationed. Your airshow photos are quite good. Good show!

Nick,

Your website is superb. I came into it attracted by the picture of the Sea Harrier FA2, but I found more interesting images of airplanes.

I'm myself a fanatic of photography and airplanes too, having an EOS 1V HS and an EOS 10D. Now I'm waiting for the delivery of an EOS 1D MkII, that I expect to try during the SBAC Airshow at Farnborough in a couple of weeks.

I share your appreciation of Canon cameras. My first was an AE-1, that my father gave me when I was 16 years old. Soon I found that I needed two bodies and, after working and saving, I gave my AE-1 for two A-1s (one new, the other second hand). Later the older A-1 was replaced by a wonderful T-90, a camera that I'm still in love with. I kept distance from AF at the begining, but when I saw that its technology became mature, I jumped into a couple of EOS 5 bodies.

From the EOS 5 I moved to the EOS 1N and, finaly, to my current combination.

I don't want to bother you more.

Sincere regards

I first saw this great giant at an air show in Oklahoma City in 1989. I took numerous photos of it during that show. I was reminded of this as I now live in Las Vegas, and the AN-225 is presently parked at the Las Vegas airport after delivering a transformer to a local utility company. I never thought that I would see her again. She is quite a magnificent bird.

Due to a fire all of my fathers military records were destroyed or so the Gov. says. He enlisted in the army 1943, then went to military base somewhere in maine. From there he wound up in Guam where he was severly wounded. I would like a list of military bases in Maine at that time, maybe even personnel records if anyone has anything. Does anyone have any information about a Valiant which crashed shortly after take-off from RAF Marham on September 11 1959? The crash killed the entire crew including my uncle, Flt-Lt Donald Howard. There was a subsequent Service court of inquiry into the crash but despite requests my family were never informed of the results. My mother and two aunts, Donald's sisters, are now in their late-60s and early-70s and are seeking some sort of closure on the incident. Please contact me if you have any information about the crash or especially the subsequent investigation.

Very nice photos, particularly of the Canberra. I actually found your page looking for info on an electrical problem in my '91 Celica GT. I'd make one comment on the oil change advice. It's generally best to drain the oil while the engine is warm or at least let it idle for 5 minutes before draining. Supposedly that gets any loose debris, sludge, etc. in the sump stirred up and in suspension. I've found that particularly important with the newer synthetic lubricants such as Mobil 1. Again, very nice photos! If you ever come to Las Vegas, try to time it for the biennial airshow at Nellis AFB. The 50th anniversary show several years ago was indescribable.

Great site Nick. I've bookmarked it. Your car looks well. I first fell in love with Mk. 1's in 1985 but being 17 year old at the time I couldn't afford to insure one. Cheapest quote was Ł1300 if I remember rightly. Anyway, got a few quid back off the taxman last year and the wife wanted to buy double glazing with it. Needless to say I couldn't see the point in wasting it so I bought a '89 MR2 with it instead! Great fun and well worth the 19 year wait. Cheer's Nick.

Thanks ever so much for your comprehensive, encouraging adn well-written MK1 MR2 exhaust manifold replacement article. I couldn't have done it without your guide.

The only thing I would add is that replacement manifolds can be of a slightly different shape - this results in the manifold to exhaust flange being a cm or two one way or the other. This is simply corrected by sliding the exhaust laterally in it rubber housing.

Thanks again!

Because of noise complaints we were force to use Enstone for our weekend flying. It was really great to see your airborne photo's of those two airfields. They brought back many fond memories. Thank you

You're extremely fortunate in that you can get to photograph so many varied types of aircraft. My particular favourites are the Mighty Hercules and Phantoms. I'm 44 and the only Phantoms I get to see are the plastic variety. Your site is truly wonderful.

Very nice ride. I have a 1985 mr2 and have very much enjoyed the car. I paid $800.00 for the car and put a clutch in the car which cost $600.00 and have the most fun I have ever had in any car I have owned. I am really interested in the new exhaust system and aircleaner system you have installed and intend to check out Stateside options along the same lines.

daniel gamble, Thursday August 16 2001 at 20:54:41

Mr Challoner,

Thank you for sharing your aerial photos of RAF Barford St John. Many of these fields have long since disappeared. Remebering their actions to end WWII is important. Your photos of older fields helps to honor the part they played and the sacrifices of those RAF personnel who worked and died at these locations.

As an American Air Force member stationed at RAF Barford St John (1976 - 81 and 1996 - 99) it was my honor to do my part, to serve in an allied air force at a distinguished location with so much heritage.

Thanks again for your photos. I'm sure photos of remaining WWII fields will be of interest to several local and national (UK) historical groups.

Nice to see a picture of an aircraft that I carried out third line major servicing on at SHMF RAF.St Athan and also flew in from St.Athan to Yeovilton via a test flight off the west coast of Wales. Also its nice to see its still in one piece unlike ZD992 which fell of the ramp at RNAS Yoevilton.

Nick, I had the opportunity to serve with 899 Squadron in 1991 at Yeovilton. I had an exchange posting as Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Warrant Officer and served on 899 as the SMR. It was the best time, one of the greatest trills of my life. I am now a Lieutenant Commander about to retire from the RAN after 31 years. My time on 899 will stay with me for ever.

Fantastic collection!I really enjoyed the airshow pics. As you are an aviation fan with an interest in motorsport,I am a motorsport fan who also loves aviation-check out my website! I have been taking shots at our major bi-annual airshow here at Avalon in Melbourne and have wondered whether I should work an aviation page into my site. We were lucky to have the rare participation of the RAF at this year's event-two Tornados from 617 Sq. plus a VC10 tanker and a Nimrod.A fantastic show was put on by them.
Keep up the good work.

Interesting to read your piece on the oil change. I always loosen the oil filter when the car is cold(much easier to slacken off),slightly retighten, get it running to quarter temperature and drain. NEVER loosen by piercing with a screwdriver. I learned my lesson when I once did this and the filter still wouldn't come off. Result - unable to drive the car anywhere to get parts/help.

Enjoy pictures of airlines planes. As the Railroad lovers like to say looks like TWA will soon be a fallen flag. I feel airlines, trains and buses all play a part in getting us around. Keep up the good work. Will soon hope to be able to take pictures of planes here in Louisville. This is a big hub for UPS. At night from about 11 pm until 1 am you can see the lights of the ups planes coming in and the come in right on time or there will be a lot of paper work as to why they were late or early. The ups planes from your part of the world come in doing the day time.

Great site. It's a labour of love I can see. Here's a question for you do you have any plans or photos of a Mosquito Night fighter or info on the markings. Would be grateful if you could.

Hi Nick,

I was really pleased to see your photographs from RAF Upper Heyford. In the mid 80's I worked there as a Civillian Transportation Supervisor for the 20th Transportation Squadron. I was based there for almost a couple of years, some times I drove around the flightline transporting pilots to and from their fighter jets. There was a very real community spirit working at Heyford, and I must say that on the whole the American Military were quite pleasant to work with.

an excellant site, one i have been lokking for, a civilian counterpart of the military aviation sites, not to many civilian sites around, if you can suggest a few more, please let me know.

I would also appreciate it if you could look through your collection for aircraft photo's damaged in flight, ground or crash, these are for training purposes for aviation fire-fighters, any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated

thanks

I think that the Waddington airshow was as good as it has been every year. I have been 5 years running and each year has been different and more interesting with more things to do however every year I seem to miss the parachutists as it is always raining!!! My personal favorite has got to have been the Saab Vigan which unfortunatly i missed this year!

I'm a 25year old who since he passed his driving test 6 years ago has always wanted an mr2 mark 1. After owning a 86'1.0 litre nova, a 86'pegeot 309 1.3GL,and at the moment a 94'renault clio 1.9rt diesel I am finally in a financial situation where I can now buy an mr2!! Before visiting your site the only thing I knew about an mr2 was that I always wanted one. Thanks to you I now know more about my dream car including what it really looks like inside. I've decided that I want an 89't-bar because I now know that the engine is better as are the brakes and suspension compared to the pre 88' cars. (it also has a leather interior).I would like to finish by thanking u for designing such an informative site and I'll be looking forward to reading the new sections. naeem

I am an aviation enthusiast and choppers are dear to my heart expecialy as I am at the moment undergoing selection to get into the South African Air Force where I will under go training to fly choppers. The Puma is one of my most faverite choppers as for many years the were operated by the S.A.A.F and were a fimiliar sight to the public at air shows on news reels evacuating people from ill-fated ships off the South African coast, rescuing climbers stranded in the mountains and often in desaster relief ( fires, floods ect... ), and every South Afican soldier remembers them for taking them in and out of contacts often under heave fire, truly a remarkable machine

This is an excellent website. Being from the United States I don't get to see many of these aircraft at local airshows. I too enjoy airshow photography. I read the names of your cameras and I believe that I have the same. Here they are called the EOS Elan IIe. I only have one EOS 50. I also have an EOS Rebel. I was wondering if you could offer any tips on taking airshow pictures. I have they exact same lenses as you and have tried everything. I stumbled across your site while looking for an image of a Mosquito. So far no luck (who would have thought it would be that hard to find such a photo) but I really enjoyed your site. Good work.

Edmonton was formerly a very large air base, (it had a 15,000 ft runway, which was an alternate landing site for the space shuttle!) But a few years it was closed and then handed over to the army. The first thing the dummies did was start driving tanks up and down the runway, so it has been de-commisioned, probably for good.

In any event, you have a good site, and I can see you put a lot of work into it. I enjoyed myself.

Thanks for an interesting set of pictures of control towers. Regarding the glasshouse on top of the one at Strubby which you felt probably dated from the fifties: you may be right but I can tell you that it definitely was not there on 28th September 1956 which is when I finally escaped from the building having spent 20-odd months of my National Service youth within it! Good wishes.

I send a comment earlier, but I forgot to write up the Website. I don`t remember the adress exately, but if you will see, search on the words that I have written. It`s a great one about airshows on Jarlsberg airport m.m. where among others Mark Hanna came with his Spitfire. And even though in size it`s not the biggest airshow he has been to, he said it`s was the best, because of the respond, the very nice Norwegian people, the respect we have for these warbirds, and olso he met a lot of veterans that flew Spitfire and Mustangs during World War II. Hege

Hege Herholdt, Friday October 8 1999 at 16:24:55

Mark Hanna was a friend of me and my boyfriend, he flew at an airshow we had on Jarlsberg airport here in Norway, my boyfriend was leader of the show.I was just sitting here trying to find as much as I could about the company he had. Just curious. We think it`s so sad what happened to Mark. Two year`s ago I was so lucky to be a passenger in a P51 Mustang, and together with Mark and his Spitfire we flew a "dogfight" over an airport here in Norway. I will never forget that. I am a skydiver myself, and love it, but this flight topped it without doubts! Hege

I was based at RNAS Yoevilton from mid 1965 to May 1966 attached to 893 Squadron. I had just returned from the Far East having joined the Squadron out there in Singapore, and was interested in getting any old pictures of the FAW Mk1 aircraft, and a copy of the Sqdn crest. If you ever get e-mail from Dave Duckett, give him my e-mail. I would be interested to hear from any old 893's circa 1966. eg Snowy Snowdon. Tom Smith who actually crossed pathes with me in Cape Town South Africa whilst on a tour of duty on the Eagle in 1973.

Great page! I'm from the U.S., and I've never been to RIAT but I'd like to go sometime. The airshows we have here are totally civilian dominated and from your pictures it seems like there's just about every type of military combat aircraft currently flying in the display! Can't wait to see your RIAT 99 photos (I assume you will be attending)!
